7 Steps to Make 2016 Your Best Year Ever!

Okay it’s here. The time where everyone posts their New Year Resolutions all over social media and or just even in private.

Goal setting and intention setting is really wonderful and helpful for most people. I certainly have a list of real resolutions or things I want to aim for. I like it. But it’s not all I do!

You see, if you don’t have a plan of action to complement your goals, it just won’t all happen by magic, wishful thinking or hoping.

I’ve know you’ve heard me say this before but…you need to take action. And it can’t be haphazard if you want to get the best results.

So, I’ve put together 7 simple steps to help you achieve bigger and bolder goals for 2016 and every year.

First of all, it’s so important to look back and see where you’ve been. What was last year, 2015 like? What happened? What worked? What didn’t work?

As James Baldwin said: “Know from whence you came. If you know whence you came, there are absolutely no limitations to where you can go.”

What were your top big successes, your wins?

Did you get more clients than ever before?
Did you generate more revenue or income?
Did you do something new that you’d never done before? What were the results?
Did you get past some major mindset blocks?

Now, where could there be some improvement?

Were there projects you let slip through the cracks?
What did you miss out on because of bad or no planning?
Where did you feel that you were “sloppy” or unprofessional (not to be mistaken with imperfect)?
Where did you lack confidence that in turn, kept you back?
Where did you quite frankly, mess up?!

What are you going to do in 2016 to really change things in a meaningful and huge way?

Well, I’ve decided to help you with this…of course!

Here are the 7 steps I’ve complied to help you make 2016 the slam-dunk year you are looking for!

Step 1: Reflect on what you want 2016 to look like in all ways

  • Do you want to develop online training products or other products? Or upgrade current products?
  • Do you need to rebrand or spruce up your brand and relaunch?
  • How many vacations do you want to take?
  • How many days a week to you want to work?
  • What is the personal/work balance you want this year?
  • What do you want your work environment to be like?
  • How do you want to feel about your business?

Write it all down in a place you can refer to easily so it doesn’t get forgotten.

And if you are into Vision Boards, then go for it. If you are into Creative Visualization, ditto. Whatever works for you to reinforce this in a real way on a continuous basis.

Step 2: Plan your WHOLE year

I know it’s difficult for some to imagine what will happen ALL year. I struggled with this for a long while, (it’s a personality thing) but even if things don’t happen exactly as planned, at least you have a plan and much more will happen just by that fact alone. Some people call this Blueprinting BTW.

  • So, what do you want to happen in the first quarter? Second quarter etc.?
  • What needs to happen beforehand to lead up to this happening?
  • What needs to happen all year to get to what you want to happen by the end of the year.

You see, a lot of entrepreneurs fly by the seat of their pants and then miss out on much because they haven’t planned what might have needed planning months before an opportunity or strategy happening. They are drowning in the stress of the moment…all year.

So, actually put things in your calendar now. Plot the year and then reverse engineer. The is a major de-stressor.

Write it all down in a place you can refer to easily so it doesn’t get forgotten.

Step 3: Have a CLEAR revenue/income goal

A lot of business people don’t have a very strong and clear revenue goal. And almost every single time I ask a client for their financial goals, they flounder and feel very uncomfortable. This is money fear and until you get past this enough to function and prosper, the money flow will be a struggle.

The best way to face this “Money Story” is to get courageous about stating how much money you WANT to generate – not how much money you think might be possible, or safe, or what your “little self” deserves…. or all those mind gymnastics we do before daring to state what we WANT!

  • Set a revenue goal now that is a stretch (even if it doesn’t happen, you won’t die…and you will be closer to your goal than if you undercut yourself at the starting gate)!
  • Be specific.
  • Write it all down in a place you can refer to easily so it doesn’t get forgotten.

But if you are throwing out a number like 10 Billion dollars for this year and you are currently making $20K, that might be “magical wand” thinking and that is an indicator for me that there is some digging deep to do to make it a stretch without making it almost impossible without a major miracle happening to have it manifest. So, get real with yourself and find that number.

Step 4: Get clear on the skills/training you need to acquire to make an impactful difference in your business this year

  • Do you need to know finally get trained on how to sell in a way that doesn’t feel sleezy?
  • Do you need to learn how to create webinars/videos?
  • Do you need to learn how to network way more effectively?
  • Do you need to master Social Media to build your following/brand?

Write it all down in a place you can refer to easily so it doesn’t get forgotten.

Step 5: Get more support

The people in the world who are at the top of their game, ALL have coaches. The President of the United States has coaches. Top athletes and business people have coaches. You are no different and it is about time you stop differentiating between “them” and you. You ARE “them”!

If you want to realize your full potential, you need help. Personally, the periods where I was between coaches, are the periods where my business was merely being babysat.

And where else could you get support that would get your business galloping?

  • Could you get a Virtual Assistant to handle those tasks that are eating up your precious time where you could be doing Business Building activities (i.e.: revenue creating ones)
  • Could you hire a business coach? (Yes, I know a good one!)
  • Could you invest in a product or program that will help you achieve your goals faster and easier?
  • Could you hire someone to handle your Social Media?
  • Could you get more childcare if you are a parent?
  • Could you hire someone to clean your home?
  • Could you hire someone to do those tekky tasks that are frustrating you and taking you away from your biz?

Take a good, hard look about the support you need this year to help you achieve your goals.

Invest. Invest. Invest.

I will say that this is hands down, the one thing that will create more leaps and bounds this year and investing more and more in my business has made it grow immensely each and every year. We can’t do everything ourselves and our minds shouldn’t be multi-tasking as much as they are. Very little can be achieved if we are continually pulled in too many directions.

Step 6: Take stock of all that did not work last year…and stop it!

We so often blur the lines of the old year to the New Year, keeping up habits, strategies and even tasks that not only don’t serve us, but hold us back, sabotage our businesses and even more, demoralize us.

If we could look down on our lives like birds way up in a tree, we would observe many patterns that are being repeated time and again and we would see very little impact with many of these things we are doing! So why continue?

Get clear on what you did last year and be honest about whether it really worked well nor not.

  • Did a marketing plan yield well or not? If not, try something else but not something haphazard. Really strategize. Be creative. Business is testing. You have to be willing to course-correct or overhaul completely.
  • Did you get from goal to goal or just dribbled along all year, telling everyone that business is “fine” and “going well”? Nothing works better than coaching. (Sorry folks. It’s been proven time and again.)
  • Did your business card really get you results? Redo if not.
  • Are you hiding yourself behind your computer? Not being visible enough out of fear? Be courageous and make some big step to get out of your “safe” but “not working for you” zone.
  • Did you engage in negative self talk? I really empathize as I used to be complete complainer! The good news is we can all change this. So, stop it and replace that talk with positive stuff. It will become a habit.

Step 6: Create a 90 day plan

All this taking stock is wonderful, right? But if we don’t make it actionable and bite-size, it won’t happen. It’s just a bunch of overwhelming notes. So get started right this moment on making it happen.

So we need to Blueprint in smaller chunks. Let’s start on the first 90 days (first quarter) and get really real here.

  • What do you need to do the very first week of January 2016 to have the 90 day goals happen?
  • The first day of the first week, the second, etc.
  • Then what will that lead you to for the second week? Etc..
  • Then write down what needs to happen each day of each week. This makes it immediate and urgent.
  • And then keep doing this for the 12 weeks. That is not overwhelming and very neat. And you will see many “aha’s” along the way because you are seeing how the puzzle pieces of time and action all fit together in the master plan. It’s very grassroots strategy.Once you have the first 90 day plan, you can see how that fits into your WHOLE year plan in Step 1.
  • Rinse and repeat for the next 3 quarters.

You can keep adjusting each  90 days to reflect what happened in the last quarter.

This breaking down of time and tasks is the most effective way to keep your bearings straight and to not get overwhelmed or over-stressed. It’s my anchor and keeps me grounded. And something magical happens when we get organized. We feel way more professional and we carry that energy out into the world.

Now a note about all this writing down and why it’s important to have it handy: Some of us tend to get really excited about taking stock and writing out lists and getting clear. And that is already a success because writing things down is something ALL hugely successful people have in common. BUT if we write them down for the sake of it and to get that warm, fuzzy feelingand forget where we put these notes…we forget most of it!

Don’t let that happen this year.

Keep them handy and filed on your desktop or printed out in front of your workspace. It works.

It is amazing how quickly a year passes. If you don’t do this, it flits by and you miss out on conscious progress.

Let’s not leave your Precious 2016 up to chance. It is after all part of your “Precious Life”.

Honor that and have the most amazing and impactful in a great way year in 2106!
